GEO vs SEO: What Changes With AI Search

GEO and SEO share a foundation but optimize for different outputs — a ranking position versus a citation in an AI answer. Here is what actually changes, what stays the same, and how to do both at once.

How to Do Both at Once

The mistake is treating GEO and SEO as separate projects. They are two outputs of one content engine. A single well-built article should rank in classic search, get cited in AI answers, and convert the humans who arrive either way. To make every article do all three:

  1. Target a real query with clear search intent (SEO).
  2. Answer it in the first paragraph, quotably (GEO).
  3. Structure with question-shaped headings, lists, and a table where the topic fits (both).
  4. Add specific, citable facts — numbers, dates, examples (both, leaning GEO).
